NATIONAL TEST PREPARATION

ACT-Prep*

The CVA will not be able to offer the full range of courses offered in the traditional setting.  Specifically, we are unable to offer some AP courses due to limited capacity and the approval process from the state of TN, College Board (the governing body of AP) and the colleges that grant the credit.  Many of the requested courses are very heavy hands-on lab courses that cannot be completed in a completely virtual setting.  As a new program, we have to do what we are offering, well.  The courses offered must be taught to the same standards and levels as the live courses at CHS.  With that being said, the only way to maintain the academic integrity of all of the courses offered is to offer what we can ensure will be held to the same standard and expectations (and approved through the governing body).  As this is brand new this year, we are working hard to ensure graduation requirements first as that is the only true state requirement for High Schools, and then do as much as we can, with academic integrity, for those that are not comfortable in the live school setting. While we would love to have every single offering available, that is just simply not possible with the standards that are expected from many sides of this. We are trying our best to give parents an option for their students to meet graduation requirements, safely at home if they so choose.  We do hope to expand the offerings for High School students over the years in the completely virtual setting, but this will take time.

Parents who have enrolled their child(ren) in the CVA who would now like to send them to the traditional school setting, must submit this information via the electronic form below.  A separate form is needed for each child.

Collierville Virtual Academy 2020-2021 Unenrollment Form

The CVA will adhere to Collierville Schools attendance policy (linked here).  Attendance will be tracked through Team virtual meetings and student engagement, and assignment completion.
Yes, the CVA will run just like the tradition setting where students will have formative and summative assessments.  The CVA will adhere to the Collierville Schools grading policy (linked here).
Students will need to be available during regular school hours. There will be specific times outlined where students will participate in synchronous (in real time) activities, but also times where they will have asynchronous assignments, that they will complete during their own time.  The amount of time it takes for your child to complete the work will depend on his/her work pace.  Students will receive a schedule outlining the work format for the each day.
CVA teachers will be held to the same expectations as those in the traditional classroom and will be completely responsible for customizing (virtual) instruction to meet the needs of their students.  They will be expected to facilitate high quality instruction in the virtual setting just as they would in the traditional setting, only through virtual avenues.  We would like to reiterate that Edgenuity is simply the platform that will be used in the CVA, but not the ONLY tool or form of instructional delivery.  There will be a balance of synchronous (in real time) and asynchronous (assignments where students will work on their own) classwork/activities that will be implemented using the Edgenuity platform, along with Collierville Schools’ current resources (Schoology, SeeSaw, digital textbooks, etc.).  There will be some form of teacher/student involvement/interaction daily.  This might be a class discussion or whole/small group work session through Teams, interactive participation using Kahoot or other engaging tools, etc.  Teachers will have the autonomy make choices as to how they will deliver instruction, as they would in the traditional classroom setting.  Schedules will be provided to students that outline how/when students will participate during the day (Teams, independent work, class collaboration, etc.).
The CVA will follow the state’s guidelines for the required hours of instruction (same hours as the traditional classroom).  However, because teaching/learning will take place in a virtual setting, it gives students flexibility to complete work at their own pace (asynchronous); therefore, the actual number of hours your child will spend on schoolwork will depend on his/her work pace.  In addition, teachers will have regular office hours to answer questions, provide support, and communicate with parents and students as needed.

Hello Parent/Caregiver,

Thank you for visiting the Collierville Virtual Academy page. Our mission is to provide students with high quality instruction in a flexible learning environment. Our goal is to create a positive learning experience where students succeed and feel a sense of community with their cohorts and teachers. We understand that teaching and learning may look different in a virtual setting and this concept is new to us all. We ask that you give us grace when needed and look forward to working alongside you to make the CVA a success!

As you weigh your options to make the best possible choice for your child(ren)’s education, we encourage you to carefully read all provided information. While the CVA will be the perfect fit for some students, it may not be the best placement for all. It is important to understand that students enrolled in the CVA must have a “learning coach” who will be responsible for the student’s participation and learning each day, and will be present with students in grades K-8 for a minimum of 4-6 hours per day. This will ensure that student supervision is priority and that learning will be supported by both the online instructors and the adult present within the home setting.

As we continue to navigate uncharted waters, we are committed to providing the best possible education for all students regardless of their educational setting. We understand as we move forward many questions will arise. Please know, we want to be as transparent as possible and will update this FAQ on a regular basis to keep everyone informed. If you have a question that is not included below, please email CVAcademy@colliervilleschools.org. We value your input, appreciate your patience and support, and look forward to taking this journey together!

Sincerely,

Sheryl Johnson
Director of Collierville Virtual Academy
and Educator Effectiveness

The Collierville Virtual Academy (CVA) is a virtual educational opportunity offered by Collierville Schools to students who elect not to attend school in the traditional setting during the 2020-2021 school year. All instruction is 100% online. The CVA is option #2 as outlined in the Collierville Schools Reopening and Recovery Plan.

The CVA is open to students who are enrolled in Collierville Schools. Information regarding new student registration can be found here. Students must be enrolled in CS prior to enrolling in the CVA.

Parents must complete the Collierville Virtual Academy Enrollment Form by July 29, 2020 to enroll their child(ren) in the CVA.

Student(s) will be automatically enrolled into traditional learning (in-person school) if the parent/caregiver does not select the CVA program by the deadline.

The CVA offers full-time enrollment for grades K-12.

Remote learning is our contingency plan for students that are in the traditional option (in-person classes). If schools close due to increased COVID-19 cases and based on state and/or local official determinants, students would transition to district remote classroom platforms utilizing current digital resources. Students attending in the traditional setting will not shift to the CVA in the event of school closures.

Virtual learning will take place through the Collierville Virtual Academy, which is our digital platform dedicated to complete online learning.  In the event that schools close, CVA students will remain in the virtual academy.

All CVA students will be assigned a guidance counselor. School counselors will support students and families to promote a safe and positive learning environment and build social/emotion awareness.

Yes, all instructional materials needed to complete the CVA program are provided by Collierville Schools.

Collierville Schools will provide all K-12 students with a device. K-8 students will use iPads and 9-12 students will use laptops. Students enrolled in the CVA will be expected to follow the guidelines outlined in the Collierville Schools Resource Guide and Acceptable Use Policy. The process for distributing devices will be communicated after students enroll in the CVA.

Yes, internet is needed to utilize the virtual platform.

The approved CS school calendar will be followed, no matter how your student receives their instruction.  The approved calendar for the 2020-2021 school year can be accessed here.

Edgenuity has been purchased by our district for use in several ways throughout the CS district.  This program (formerly known as Odysseyware) has been used for several years at the 6-12 level. We have chosen this platform as a supplemental, video-based resource for our students and teachers that choose the Collierville Virtual Academy.  This platform is aligned with the Tennessee Academic Standards and allows for our own Collierville teachers, students and parents to monitor their students’ progress while completing activities and assignments.  All of our Collierville teachers, that will be teachers of record in the CVA program, will customize their individual programs for their students’ and class needs to ensure the alignment and pacing with our approved Collierville curriculum.  Instruction will be provided daily in both a synchronous (live teacher) and an asynchronous (on their own schedule/pace) platform.

All students enrolled in the CVA must have a “learning coach.” A learning coach is  a designated responsible adult such as: parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, older sibling, neighbor, etc. who will be responsible for the student's participation and learning on a daily basis. Learning Coaches will need to be present with students in grades K-8 for a minimum of 4-6 hours per day. This will ensure that student supervision is priority and that learning will be supported by both the online instructors and the adult present within the home setting.

Our goal is to have only Collierville teachers teach in the CVA. However, our staffing needs will determine whether or not we utilize non-district personnel.

All students, regardless of the educational setting, will be part of Collierville Schools. We want our CVA students and families to feel a sense of family and plan to incorporate opportunities for students, parents, and teachers to communicate regularly and build relationships with their teachers and classmates.

Sample schedules per grade bands can be found here.

We are actively working with our university partners to see what dual enrollment courses may be offered virtually. As soon as details are concrete, we will update our families enrolled in Collierville Virtual Academy.

The Edgenuity platform provides a balanced combination of asynchronous (self-paced- completed on the student’s own time) and synchronous (students on a live class lesson at the same time with their teacher) coursework. Teachers will post weekly schedules outlining assignments and lesson formats (ie: live meetings, self-paced assignments, etc.). In cases where the instruction is synchronous, students must participate in real time.  For asynchronous assignments, students will work at their own pace. Regardless of the format, students are expected to complete all assignments by the outlined timeline.

Teachers will also hold set office hours to answer questions, provide support, and check in with students and parents using a variety of tools (Microsoft Team meetings, video chats, online platforms, emails, phone calls, etc.).

Attending school virtually requires time online as well as time offline to successfully complete required lessons. The amount of time students spend on the computer/iPad is dependent on their grade level and work pace. Virtual courses may require students to work independently offline with their textbooks and other educational materials. This work requires the oversight of a dedicated Learning Coach who will be responsible for the student’s participation each day, and will be present with students in grades K-8 for a minimum of 4-6 hours per day.  Without the time commitment of a dedicated adult, students may be less likely to be successful in an online learning environment.

Accommodations will be made for students with IEPs. Please refer to the Delivery of Services information located in the Collierville Schools Reopening and Recovery Plan for details.

The CVA is part of Collierville Schools and is tuition-free. K-12 curriculum materials are provided at no cost. However, as expected in a traditional in-person classroom, parents are responsible for providing school supplies like pencils and paper, calculators, etc. when needed.

While events such as field trips, school dances, etc. have been put on “pause” for all students for the 2020-2021 school year, students enrolled in the CVA will be allowed to participate in school events that do take place.

Students are encouraged to remain in the CVA for the school year. In an effort to protect academic fortitude, however, students may re-enter the traditional school setting in January 2021, after meeting with an administrator and school counselor to discuss an individual plan for transitioning into the traditional classroom. Students do not have to “test” back into the traditional setting.
