COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. – Collierville High School history teacher Allison Collier has been selected by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation as the 2022 Tennessee Fellow. Collier is the first Collierville High School representative since the creation of the district in 2013 and the second teacher overall, after Susan Hines was selected as the Tennessee James Madison Fellow in 2011.
The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to improve teaching about the United States Constitution in secondary schools. It is America’s most prestigious award in constitutional history and government for secondary teachers. One James Madison Fellow is chosen from each state annually.
“We are extremely proud of Mrs. Collier and her selection as the 2022 James Madison Memorial Foundation Fellow representative for the state of Tennessee,” said Collierville High School Principal Roger Jones, III. “Mrs. Collier is a consummate professional dedicated to educating our students about the indelible democracy of these United States of America and the history which has shaped the very fabric of our national government. I cannot think of an individual more worthy of this prestigious honor.”
The Foundation pays for each Fellow to obtain a Master’s Degree in American History, Political Science, or Government from an accredited university. Collier plans to begin her work on a Master’s in American History and Government from Ashland University (Ohio) this summer.
Fellows are required to take a rigorous 6-credit Summer Institute graduate course, Foundations of American Constitutionalism, in the Washington D.C. area through Georgetown University. The course includes lectures and discussions on the Constitution from academics and prominent public figures, meetings with U.S. government officials, and field trips to important historical sites. The course is taught by well-known and respected academics in the fields of History and Political Science.
Collier’s teaching career began at Collierville High School in 2008. She currently teaches AP U.S. History and State Dual Credit U.S. History.
